This shows the original invitation from 1867 given to Mary Wolcott to join Mr. Gilbert at Hull's Hall in Maumee at a cotillion to benefit the families of deceased and disabled Civil War veterans.

A soldier's letter written by Joseph Wolcott from his encampment in Bermuda Hundred, Virginia to his good friend, Mr. Elijah Whitmore, June 10, 1864.

*Excerpted from The Elijah Whitmore Papers, a series of Civil War era letters, covering the period from 1863 to 1866. BGSU Center for Archival Collections.

This gown is typical of the 1860's with jewel neckline, pagoda sleeves, narrow waistline and full skirt worn over a small hoop.  The black braid trim across shoulders and sleeves is designed to make the waist seem smaller.
